|Mastering and Mix Buss Shelving EQ Inspired by the Classic P. J. Baxandall Shelving Curves
YOU WILL HEAR THE DIFFERENCE.
The BAX EQ is built to make good sound better – it is not a «chainsaw» style eq but a fine polishing tool.
The unique Baxandall curves are broad and gentle, so if you are boosting +3 dB keep in mind that you are boosting a wide range of frequencies at different levels along the unique curve. This is why it does not have +/-15 dB of boost like many EQs that work in a narrower bandwidth.
It becomes even more powerful when the filters are used in conjunction with the boost/cut – you can shape the curve in what is known as the Pultec style – simultaneously boosting with the main controls and cutting with the filter.
It is equally useful in a tracking path as it is on the mix buss, or in mastering.
The unsurpassed clarity, ultra low distortion and extremely low noise lets the BAX sit in a high performance mic/mic pre chain without lowering the quality or changing the character of these units natural sound.
The BAX curves are perfect for gentling up an over-bright condenser mic and conversely it is just as well-suited for adding air to a ribbon mic.
The hi-and low-pass filters are multi-purpose – the first step on each removes out-of-audio band information (DC on the low-end, HF oscillation on the top end) which make compressors and A/D converters overwork and limit the overall amount of level that you can capture in a recording.
The EQ world is full of units that have balanced their ultimate sound quality in favor of flexibility, more eq points, etc. but the BAX design put sound quality first and presents a unique and valuable feature set that gives the engineer an EQ that only makes things sound better.
Built in response to demand from a professional studio community searching for unique sonic signatures, the Dangerous design team took inspiration from the classic Baxandall shelving curves of the 60’s and 70’s and created a unique equalizer with a 21st century mastering aesthetic. The result is pure emotive expression with audiophile accuracy.
